[email protected] _________________________ T he assessment of the patient with a neuro-otological problem is not a complex task if approached in a logical manner. It is best addressed by taking a comprehensive history, by a physical examination that is directed towards detecting abnormalities of eye movements and abnormalities of gait, and also towards identifying any associated otological or neurological problems. This examination needs to be mindful of the factors that can compromise the value of the signs elicited, and the range of investigative techniques available. The majority of patients that present with neuro-otological symptoms do not have a space occupying lesion and the over reliance on imaging techniques is likely to miss more common conditions, such as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), or the failure to compensate following an acute unilateral labyrinthine event. The role of the neuro-otologist is to identify the site of the lesion, gather information that may lead to an aetiological diagnosis, and from there, to formulate a management plan.

General vestibular testing.
A dysfunction of the vestibular system is commonly characterized by a combination of phenomena involving perceptual, ocular motor, postural, and autonomic manifestations: vertigo/dizziness, nystagmus, ataxia, and nausea. These 4 manifestations correlate with different aspects of vestibular function and emanate from different sites within the central nervous system. The diagnosis of vestibular s...
متن کاملNeuro-otological and psychiatric abnormalities in a community sample of people with dizziness: a blind, controlled investigation.
OBJECTIVES To determine neurootological and psychiatric abnormalities associated with complaints of dizziness in an epidemiological community sample of people of working age, and the extent of comorbidity between neuro-otological and psychiatric dysfunction. METHOD A survey of 3884 people randomly selected from six general practice lists identified 262 people with significant dizziness, from ...
متن کاملA New Structure for Direct Measurement of Temperature Based on Negative Temperature Coefficient Thermistor and Adaptive Neuro-fuzzy Inference System
Thermistors are very commonly used for narrow temperature-range high-resolution applications, such as in medicine, calorimetry, and near ambient temperature measurements. In particular, Negative Temperature Coefficient (NTC) thermistor is very inexpensive and highly sensitive, whose sensing temperature range and sensitivity are highly limited due to the intrinsic nonlinearity and self-heating p...
متن کاملThe bedside and office neuro-ophthalmology examination.
The neuro-ophthalmologic examination provides an enormous amount of information about the 40% of fibers that provide afferent and efferent limbs of the visual, pupillary, and ocular motor pathways. A few tools and the correct testing approach will maximize the value of this examination. This chapter provides step-by-step examination methods and points out some of the common errors that are made.
